Career Overview Serj Tankian was five years old when his parents and younger brother moved from Armenia to Los Angeles, California. He was enveloped in music from around the age of five when he started taking singing and guitar lessons. He attended the Armenian school 'Rose & Alex Pilibosl' where he met future bandmate, Daron Malakian. Daron and Serj formed the band Soil but after a short period of time, Soil went on hiatus and broke up. Serj and Daron had then formed another band with fellow Armenians Shavo Odadjian and John Dolmayan named System of a Down. The name System of a Down came from a poem Daron had written called 'Victims of the Down' and they decided it wouldn't be as publicly appealing to leave it as 'Victims' instead of 'System'. After six albums with System of a Down the band went on hiatus to begin solo projects. Daron Malakian and John Maldoyan went on their own to create the called Scars on Broadway while Serj went on his own and created a solo record called Elect the Dead.
