Background: It was December 6th 1946 when the renound Nancy Goodman Brinker was born. We all know her as the fouNancy_and_Komen.jpgnder of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Nancy's work started young. Her sister and her started community service young around the ages of six and nine trying to raise money for polio. her efferts didnt stop there. After she had been married and had a son she had heard the terrifying news of her sister finding a lump on her breast. Nancy flew between Dallas and Peoria as her sister went through nine surgeries and chemotherapy. Although Susan fought strong for three years it came down to the last days of her life and had her sister make a promise. Susan and Nancy made the promise that Nancy would do everything in her power to help in the finding for a cure for breast cancer. After meeting the love of her life Norman Brinker she was able to fulfill that promise made to her sister. Because Norman was the founder of three major restaurant chains Nancy was able to leave work and start working towards finding the cure."It's mission is bold: eradicate the disease by improving research, screening, education, and treatment." Since the program started in 1982 the foundation has become a global influence on finding a cure for breast cancer. One of the major way the foundation raises money is by holding the Race for the Cure and it started as one races and 800 participants and now has grown into over 100 races and over one million participants. Since the foundation started to this day they have raised over $750 million, "making it one of the largest cancer charities in the world." (Thomson, 2007)

Career Overview/Accomplishments:Nancy first began her amazing career in envolvment in her community in college. She first was a member of her senate and was also president of her sorority. She had then graduated in 1968 and began her career in business and marketing. Her career started in Dallas, Texas at Neiman Marcus where she was a couture buyer. Other smaller public relation jobs follwed. At this time in her life now she was able to leave her job and start the Susan G. Komen foundation after she had been divorced and re-married. She had gathered 20 friends, $200, a typewriter, and a list of names. The first event ever to raise money for the foundation was a polo tournament. The year after the polo tournament the foundation had invited the first lady and breast cancer survivor Betty Ford. This fundraising event nearly had 700 people show up. The next was the first Race for the Cure. By 1984 the foundation had enough money to award grants for research and education. A few years after the foundation had been started Nancy had found a lump in her breast and was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had demanded that her doctor remove her breasts immediatly. After she had fought and won against cancer she had wrote about her journey in a book called "The Race is One Step at a Time." Published in 1990. In the beginning she found people very hesitant to talk about the disease but then was noticed by U.S. President Ronald Reagan and was appointed to the National Cancer Advisory Board, 1986. George H.W. Bush appointed Nancy to the three member President's Cancer Panel. Then, Preisdent George W. Bush nominated Nancy to serve as ambassador of Hungary, 2001(Thomson, 2007)

Global Influence: If it were not for Nancy Brinker being appointed to Ambassador of Hungary it may have taken her a longer time to reach past the U.S. boarders. Because Nancy has such a never-take-no-for-an-answer attitude is the reason she not only is helping cure breast cancer in the U.S. but through out the world. Nancy is such a Global influence that she is pushing for more and more every day. Now that a new law was being passed about women screenings she is fighting to have more women get screened sooner. She is also fighting so that woman in other countries have the medical supplies they need to diagnoise and cure breast cancer.

Why I Chose Nancy Brinker
: I chose Nancy Brinker as a person who influenced my generation because, She is the reason that one day girls and woman will no longer have to suffer the awful disease of Breast Cancer. If Nancy did not start the foundation so many years ago girls like me would have had to suffer the death of many other relatives and maybe one day our own death. So many lives are claimed by Breast Cancer but because of Nancy Brinker we can look forward to a breast cancer free future.
